A pioneer in energy saving

The Hartwall Lahti production plant and logistics centre was completed five years ago, and it is a pioneer in energy saving. Particular attention was paid to selecting the plant’s equipment, machinery and processes, especially with respect to water and energy consumption. One-third of the modern production facility’s energy needs are produced with biogas and the remainder is generated by natural gas.

The high standard building technology is also designed to save energy. The building technology makes it possible to recover the hot exhaust air, regulate the internal temperature and turn off unnecessary lighting.

Ending production in Helsinki and centralising operations in Lahti has reduced energy consumption by about one quarter. For instance, new technology in the kettle room saves as much as 60% of all energy because the amount of evaporation has been halved and heat is more effectively recovered.

Hartwall constantly seeks out new ways to save energy and to take a more environmentally friendly approach. For instance, the company promotes the extensive use of biowaste. The goal is to convert into energy everything that contains ethanol or sugar. The Finnish energy company St1’s Etanolix® bioethanol plant at Hartwall Lahti will be ready by the end of June 2009.
